The AVSI Foundation was founded in 1972 in Cesena, Italy, and currently has its headquarters in Milan. The foundation's early objective was to support the volunteers who had left Italy to respond to an invitation by a local community in Ulvira, Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) to cooperate in the reconstruction efforts following almost ten years of rebellion and violence. In this way the nascent organization was aptly named, the Association of Volunteers in International Service, or AVSI.
While the Foundation's core activities today are carried out by professional staff, volunteers continue to be essential to the success of its work. Today, AVSI implements over 100 humanitarian and development projects in 30 countries with the mission of supporting human development according to the principles of Catholic Social teaching.
, AVSI-USA facilitates relationships of solidarity & friendship across borders and finds resources within the U.S. to invest in the world's biggest resource, people. Through long-term partnerships with local organizations in 14 countries across the globe, AVSI-USA is able to enhance their capacity and broaden the impact of their initiatives. Thus, AVSI-USA establishes and facilitates links between the AVSI Foundation & Partner Organizations to various US Government Agencies like USAID, amongst many others.
