OPPORTUNITY is an initiative of AVSI-USA to link donors from the U.S. with the projects that AVSI supports around the world. In doing so, donors can participate in the "adventure of life" as being lived out in circumstances far different from ones own--in Brazil, Mexico and Kenya.

Donors are asked to make a long-term committment to one of three exceptional institutions which are trusted partners of AVSI and deeply embedded in their local communities. Donors become "Partners" with the organizations along their path of service and growth.

Opportunity 1: Brazil: Cantinho da Natureza in Rio de Janeiro

The Cantinho is a multi-functional community cetner with a full-time nursery school, after-school programs for at-risk youth, activities for adolescents and evening classes for adults. The center directly challenges the common mentality of resignation and indifference so prevalent in the Brazilian favela.

Opportunity 2: Mexico: Desarrollo Integral de la Juventud Oaxaquena (DIJO) in Oaxaca

DIJO is a community organization that runs activities in five centers in poor neighborhoods around the city of Oaxaca in central Mexico. After-school programs including remedial lessons, recreation, arts and sports provide crucial support to children along their personal and educational paths.

Opportunity 3: Kenya: Cardinal Otunga High School in Nairobi

This high school is the fruit of an exceptional undertaking by parents and teachers concern about the quality and limited access to secondary school education available to their children. The school provides a holistic education for the children of this urban area outside of Nairobi regardless of their ability to pay.
