AVSI Provides Relief in Myanmar; Urgent Needs Remain!

The Myanmar Disaster Relief Committee (MDRC) has been established in Yangon in response to Cyclone Nargis, which devastated portions of southern Myanmar in early May. AVSI and several other NGOs are active members of the committee, which was set up by the Catholic Church in Myanmar in accordance with the regulations of the government authorities. Thousands of survivors of the disaster in the area covered by the Diocese of Pathein have sought refuge in four camps for internally displaced persons. They are being assisted by 200 MDRC volunteers. Every three days MDRC distributes supplies such as food, clothes, blankets, mosquito nets, water, tablets to disinfect water, basic tools, and fuel for the generators and the pumps on a non-discriminatory basis.
