AVSI Programs














1993 : DIJO was founded by university students and professionals from different disciplines who identified a set of activities to support the education of children and youth in the city of Oaxaca .

1994-1995 : DIJO provided 500 free direct services to beneficiaries in the areas of medical attention, psychological support, education and legal aid.

1996-1997 : A new Project called Centro Social Juvenil was begun, reaching a total of 760 youth with medical and social services.

Initiation of psycho-educational program with personalized attention offered to 100 children with learning and behavioral problems

1998-2002 : Co-financed by AVSI and the European Economic Community , DIJO began a project benefiting 1,280 children and adolescents who participated in educational, cultural, recreational and sport activities

DIJO was awarded the Charles Peguy Prize for Methodogloies in Educaitonal Interventions, given by the Human Adventure Corporation in New York , NY .

2000 : DIJO received support from “The 20 Projects of the Pope” to reduce the educational gap of children at the primary level

  • A partnership with the Mexican Institute for Youth involved 20 university students from four institutions of higher education
  • DIJO performed an evaluation of the educational impact of the governmental program PROGRESA in the Sierra Sur region of Oaxaca.

 2003 : With the support of the national Secretary for Social Development, the Nutritional Care Program was begun through the community kitchen in Monte Albán. The comedor began serving 30 children and today reaches 157 children through the Free Breakfast Program, family support and social work activities. .

2004 : Together with the Municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez and the Secretary for Social Development, DIJO participated in a program called “Habitat” within the community of Monte Albán to fight against urban poverty and develop women's skills to improve their work perfomance and income potential.

2005 : In collaboration with a private firm, Sectores de Oaxaca , DIJO began a project for health education in the community of Tlalixtac de Cabrera.

A pscyho-pedagogical program supported by Cor-Unum, a Vatican institution for global solidarity, was begun to benefit 75 children in Monte Albán.

2006 : To expand DIJO’s activities, a project financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy was begun.

DIJO has become the intermediary organization in Oaxaca for the International Adoption Program coordinated through AVSI.
