Supporting Syrian Refugees in Lebanon
As the civil war continues in Syria, over 25,500 families of refugees are currently being sheltered in neighboring Lebanon. In 4 districts along the border, AVSI is working to help these victims who have fled their homes, leaving almost everything behind. In Bekaa Valley, AVSI and other international organizations will distribute winterization kits to help those who have only a tent for shelter can make it through the winter. In the southern regions, AVSI is assisting in schools where Syrian children have been integrated, facing the challenges of studying in a different language and culture through afternoon remedial classes and games that will be offered to classes of 30 children, whether Syrian or Lebanese, who need accompaniment.
For the people of Syria and the neighboring countries, [we implore] the gift of peace. … Violence and hatred invade people’s lives, and the first victims are women and children. Why so much horror? Why so many dead? I appeal to the international community! May we, with God’s help, be converted so as to work ardently to establish the peace that is necessary.
-Pope Benedict XVI in Lebanon, September 2012
