AVSI Brazil, Tree of Life Soccer Program Salvador de Bahia, Brazil Recently, AVSI attended a civil society forum organized by the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, to present on its sports program in Belo Horizonte. Working in close collaboration with Fiat, the municipal government, and the IDB, AVSI’s program proposes soccer as a means of integral human development and education in the lives of adolescents.

Fabrizio Pellicelli, AVSI’s Country Representative in Brazil, presented on AVSI’s sports program in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on Thursday, March 13 in Salvador de Bahia at an IDB forum focused on civil society. The forum was titled “Quality of Life - Alliance for a Positive Impact”. IDB staff, government officials and private sector leaders gathered to discuss future partnerships between the public and private sector to improve the quality of life of citizens.

At the forum, AVSI presented on the success of its sports program in Betim, on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte. The program is part of Fiat’s “Tree of Life” initiative, launched in 2004 as part of a global social responsibility campaign. The sports activities, particularly soccer, bring children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18, from the most impoverished areas of the community, together in safe environments where they can learn and grow together.

The goal of the project has been to bring youth together through soccer in order to reduce the violence and deterioration in their lives.

During the forum, Pellicelli emphasized that “the culture of sports is based on the premise of the value of human life, and requires more than rule following. A vision of each individual as a seeker of education, happiness, beauty is required.”
