Rimini Meeting 2011: AVSI stand features CoopeArvore of FIAT Brazil
Monday, 22 August 2011 14:41

From August 21-27,2011, AVSI Foundation will present  a booth at the 32nd annual Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples in Rimini Italy, a cultural event that brings together the realms of the non-profit sector, business, politics, science, and music and art filling a convention center the size of 20 city blocks in Manhattan with an average 700,000 attendees from around the world. In line with this year’s theme “And existence becomes an immense certainty,” AVSI’s large stand will be an opportunity for AVSI representatives to communicate the latest news and discoveries of its work; these being what found the certainty upon which the organization, with the people it meets in each country, continues to build and to flourish.

This year, the highlight of the booth will be a group of Brazilian women from the CoopeArvore initiative who will be demonstrating their work reusing scrap material from the Fiat plant in order to make products such as bags, key chains, or other car accessories which are then bought and marketed by auto distributors.

The contingent present in Rimini for the Meeting are only a few of the faces that make up the developing adventure in cooperation between Fiat Brazil and AVSI and its partners in Belo Horizonte, who have been working together for years to provide job opportunities and improve quality of life in the neighborhood.

Also featured will be St. Joseph Hospital - Kitgum of Uganda, supported with medical personnel, equipment and technical assistance from AVSI since the 1980’s, now displayed in vivid color by pictures from surgeon Piero Narilli. The photos narrate the Italian Armed Forces’ humanitarian expedition to help at the missionary hospital in the year of its 50th anniversary. The travels of Narilli and the others involved also inspired a book and an exhibit to tell the unique story.

In addition to the booth, AVSI’s work in various countries will be visible in the cultural festival through participation in public presentations and panels throughout the week. In particular, we would like to note:

- the key-note presentation for Friday, August 26, at 5:00 PM, will feature discussion on the topic of the challenges in North Africa with Franco Frattini, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nabil El-Arabi General Secretary of the Arab League, Naguib Sawiris, Chairman and CEO of Weather Investments Group, and Prof. Wael Farouq of the American University of Cairo.

- a meeting on the topic of Volunteer Work and Development Friday, August 26, at 3:00 PM held by AVSI General Secretary Alberto Piatti and Cardinal Robert Sarah, President of the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum.”
