Two Medical Doctors Needed in Uganda

AVSI is an international NGO, based in Italy, implementing Multisectoral Emergency and Development Programmes in Uganda, Eastern DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and Southern Sudan. AVSI has been present in Uganda since 1984, providing a multi-sectoral response to the immense needs of the people of Acholiland. In the Health Sector, AVSI, funded by several bilateral, multilateral and private donors, provides support to the Health System of the districts of Pader, Kitgum and Gulu, in northern Uganda in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Civil Society Organisations and Private Not-for-Profit Health Providers, to cope with the burden caused by the 19-year old conflict. AVSI supports the 6 hospitals operating in the Acholi region, and it is seeking for experienced Medical Officers with a curriculum of work in hospitals in tropical regions, to guarantee full coverage of health care and to provide on-the-job training to the local doctors in St. Joseph’s hospital located in Kitgum town.

AVSI is looking for an experienced Medical Officer

specialized in Infectious Diseases

to be based in St. Joseph’s hospital Kitgum, Northern Uganda.

 

Title: Medical Officer with specialization in Infectious Diseases

Duty Station: Based in St. Joseph’s hospital, Kitgum

Qualifications:

The Experienced Medical Officer will have specialisation in Infectious Diseases, with at least 5 years of experience in management and implementation of HIV/AIDS programs (previous experience in Northern Uganda will be an asset).

 

Nature of Duty:

1.      As a Medical Officer, working full time in the AIDS-Clinic responsible for the care of the HIV/AIDS adults and paediatric patients attending the OPD under the supervision of the Medical Superintendent, in particular diagnosing the most common opportunistic infections and staging the PLWHAs to define eligibility for ART; prescribing pharmacological and other treatment for the diagnosed conditions; doing regular follow up of patients’ condition, with a special attention to the patients on antiretroviral therapy.

2. Training to hospital staff in HIV/AIDS main issues (HIV/AIDS epidemiology, prevention, management of opportunistic infections, management of ART) through on the on-the-job practice and training sessions.

specialized in Paediatrics with experience in Nutrition

to be based in St. Joseph’s hospital Kitgum, Northern Uganda.

The experienced Medical Officer will have a specialisation in Paediatrics and/or Nutrition, with at least 2 years of experience in management and implementation of child care and nutrition programs (previous experience in the target districts will be an asset).

 

Nature of Duty:

  1. As a Medical Officer, working full time in the Paediatric Ward, responsible for the care of patients admitted in the ward under the supervision of the Medical Superintendent, in particular doing the diagnosis of the most common paediatric, medical and surgical conditions; prescribing pharmacological and other treatment for the diagnosed conditions; doing regular follow up of patients, with particular attention to the children admitted in the Therapeutic Feeding Centre of the hospital.
  2. Training to hospital staff in paediatric and nutrition issues, through on the on-the-job practice and training sessions.
