In the summer of 2011, University of Notre Dame Law School student James Emanuel spent 12 weeks as a research intern with AVSI’. He spent his time in the office in Amman, Jordan, where AVSI’s projects include those which support Iraqi refugees who have fled the conflict and persecution in their country. Emanuel’s final report, entitled “Embracing Reality to Find Sustainable Solutions: An Examination of the Law Surrounding Work for Iraqi Refugees in Jordan,” particularly adresses the legal challenges faced by these refugees in accessing formal employment. The report details current law and practice regarding work permits and recommends options to improve the access for these men and women to sustainable livelihoods.
