Three Haitians, Sherline, Wesly, and Delva, became Italian chefs for the week August 21-27 for the Meeting of Rimini. The 27, 28, and 24- year olds are collaborators in AVSI’s educational program for children and teens in the poor Cité Soleil neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, but they took a plane from the Haitian capital to Italy in order to volunteer in one of the restaurants serving attendees of the Rimini cultural event.

They explain that the decision to volunteer in Italy was motivated by gratitude and curiosity: “The friends of AVSI, after the earthquake, helped us a lot. They stayed close to us. The funds which were collected are now making it possible for us, with the help of the AVSI staff and collaborators, to do many things to help our country and our people. We are here at the Meeting because we became close to them. We want to know and to better understand what it is that gets the people we know moving with such joy. Something is happening; it is becoming a certainty.”

Throughout the course of the week, the three volunteers were able to meet many of the AVSI staff from around the world, as well as the Haitian ambassador to Italy, Geri Benoit.
