Pristina, Kosovo. On July 1, 2011, the US Embassy in Kosovo confirmed AVSI as the recipient of one of its Democracy Commission small grants. The funds will be used for a one-year project focused on improving the quality of primary education for and lowering the abandonment rate of students of the RAE (Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian) ethnic minorities in the city of Peja.
This project is an extension of the Children of the Future program, through which AVSI Kosovo and its partner Shpresa e Jetes have offered educational opportunities in the West Region of Kosovo since 2004. Its activities throughout the year include a summer camp and cultural outings for students.
The aim of the project is to engage families through educational and social outreaches designed to increase the sense of importance given to their children’s education, as well as medical consultation when needed; students through provision of materials, recreational opportunities which promote social integration and by presenting a new outlook on their future role in society; and educators through training to improve quality of instruction, not only with regards to the content, but also to the social and emotional aspects of education.
