In Geneva on July 4-8, 2011, the United Nations Economics and Social Council (ECOSOC) opened its annual substantive session with the so-called High-level Segment, this year focusing on the topic of education in light of the Millenium Goals to be reached in 2015.
The High-level Segment is a forum to host dialogue and recommendations among representatives of member countries, of international organizations, and of various NGOs on pressing topics with regards to the UN activities in the economic and social sectors. It is attended by the 54 members of ECOSOC itself, who benefit from the input of NGOs who are recognized with consultant status.
AVSI, in general consultant status with ECOSOC since 1996, participated in the forum as it has in the past, although this year with particular interest since the theme "Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regards to education" coincides with the very heart of AVSI initiatives throughout the world. A written document was submitted on behalf of the AVSI Network that draws on its many years of multi-faceted experience in education.
