NBA Superstar Visits AVSI in Haiti
On Saturday, September 18th, NBA superstar Dwight Howard, a center in his sixth season with the Orlando Magic, and Adonal Foyal a veteran NBA player now in his third season with Orlando Magic, traveled to Port-au-Prince to visit three projects which they have chosen to support. Dwight Howard and his fund for relief and reconstruction in Haiti has chosen to support La Maranatha school overseen by AVSI in the Cite Soleil neighborhood. His grant of $12,000 will ensure that 129 students from ages 6 -18 years are able to receive a quality education during the academic year beginning October 1st.
Dwight Howard was enthusiastic about visiting the school in person and meeting the school children, which reflects his committment not only to a monetary gift but also to inspiring hope in these young people by assuring them that others are willing to bet on their potential. The players demonstrated some of their basketball techniques and invited the children to play with them on a hot Saturday morning in one of the most violent neighborhoods in all of Port-au-Prince. The school children sang songs, performed a karate demonstration and showered Dwight and his guests with smiles and joyful exuberance.
AVSI wishes to express sincere gratitude to Dwight Howard and the Dwight Howard Fund for making this visit and this grant possible.
