Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and pictured here with Alberto Piatti, AVSI Director General, included a visit to AVSI's tent cities during her trip to Haiti in early March. AVSI has been present in Haiti since 1999 working in the agriculture, food security, education and social sectors in neighborhoods around Port au Prince as well as in Les Cayes in the south. Since the earthquake, AVSI has taken charge of tent villages in Place Fierte, Bas Fontaine, Parc Bobi and Soleil 26 in Cite Soleil, providing temporary shelter, attention to women and children, and an insistence on education and pscycho-social support. AVSI's approach in this radical post-emergency context is consistent with its method: focused on the individual within a perspective of long-term solidarity.
